The Brass Studio is the result of over 80 (combined) years of teaching experiences and professional music making, between two dedicated musicians.
Primary in our approach to music are communication and enjoyment - FUN!
That is not to say that we are not serious about our teaching. We remember back to our own school days when playing music was a very enjoyable hobby.
What made that hobby even more enjoyable was the ability to do it well.
Preparing for Lessons
Taking private music lessons is a luxury that many students around the world do not enjoy. This tradition in Australia is strong and getting stronger. It is important that the most is made of this opportunity. Students need to practice every day and set enough time to cover all their work. Tips gained in the previous lesson need to be worked into their playing and technique. Practice sessions are most successful if they are about achieving clear goals. For example set out to work on a technique or learn a particularly hard passage . The goal should not be just to practice for X minutes. 2 hours of poor playing is damaging. 20 minutes of focused and well targeted practice can help build one's total musical skill set.
Often, each week, work is set for the following week. This should be carefully prepared. When sitting for exams, the programme will be well know before entry. Use the list to set a timetable that allows you to cover all the work every week. Sometimes it is good to go through all the programme in one session. Other times, pick out the most difficult passages for detailed and intense practice. Aim to gradually master all the music - play it correctly and musically - through a variety of practice sessions . DO NOT AVOID THE HARD BITS! When you are closer to the exam, aim at running the whole programme at least twice in the one session, to make sure you have plenty of stamina for the exam.
